About UST 1000: Learning in Community

UST 1000: Learning in Community helps first-year students develop a sense of belonging at UMD. In a classroom environment that fosters meaningful connections with fellow students and their instructors, they are introduced to the people and opportunities that make UMD unique.

Purpose

UST 1000 is designed to assist students in making a successful transition to UMD. It is an introduction to the academic, social, and personal opportunities that UMD has to offer. UST 1000 requires both practical and reflective learning, where students are encouraged to participate actively in diverse communities while also delving deeper into their own experience through self-reflection.

Faculty

UST 1000 courses are taught by over 40 members of the UMD faculty and staff from a variety of disciplines spanning the breadth of the institution. If you are interested in becoming a UST 1000 instructor, contact Samuel Shanks ([email protected]).

Dozens of UMD undergraduate students work with instructors to develop and present UST 1000 course content as well as to mentor students.
